Macmillan Coffee Morning

We held a Macmillan Coffee morning at Head office

A great morning was had by all we raised £333.50 – well done everyone. It was a proud day everyone got involved by either baking cakes, donating raffle prizes and of course making Tea and Coffee. Also, our RGN Jo also provided hand massages as a extra way of raising money.

We would like to thank Gee House for assisting us with holding the event in the main reception and for all the other tenants for taking part and helping us to raise money for this great charity.

Here is to the next one – we need to beat this total – fingers crossed

Your Care get glowing CQC inspection report.

Your Care Services were recently subject to a regular Care Quality Commission inspection, which was carried out during a very busy period just before Christmas (2013) – the full report is available to view here.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regularly inspects every orgnaisation that provides some form of care to people in the UK – from GPs to Dental, Hospitals and Care homes.

Taken from the CQC’s own website, the reason they carry out inspections is: We believe that everyone deserves to receive care that is safe, effective, compassionate and high-quality. For this to happen, we inspect hospitals, care homes, GPs, dental and general practices and other care services all over England.

Your Care Services was scored extremely favourably by the CQC Inspectors and we really couldn’t have asked for a better outcome from the inspection. It is a testament to all the hard work and dedication that everyone in the YCS team puts in, from the office team and management, through to each of the carers that are out and about looking after clients.

When the CQC inspector spoke with a relative of someone we care for she said:

“Yes, we were involved in planning my Mother in Law’s care. At first I was confused, a bit lost at first. It all happened so suddenly you see. But they helped me to understand what was happening, especially the people at the office.”

The following paragraph is a direct excerpt from the CQC report about Your Care Services:

People that we spoke with told us that they felt confident about the workers who supported them and the management arrangements of the service. They told us that the service was reliable and that they or their relatives had not been let down or left waiting for the care that they needed. Care workers told us that they had time to move between calls to different households and that managers responded quickly to support them in any difficulties while they were looking after people.

It means a huge amount to everyone at Your Care Services to receive positive feedback from our clients and their families – as this is why we are all in this line of work – to deliver better care for our clients.  “The Speed and efficiency with which YCS put in place Ronans care plan was more than helpful, thank you all.” Said the Mother of a Service user.

The Registered Care Manager and had this to say:

“I feel very proud of the team and how well everyone works together to achieve the outcome of this inspection. I have faith and trust in all who work for Your Care Services that they provide care with passion and dedication to all our service users.”

We are holding a Quality Assurance forum as part of our on going commitment to deliver the best possible care. Everyone is invited to attend this event, including service users, employees and health care professionals; where all will be invited to express their views on how services can be improved. The Quality Assurance forum is being held on 26th February from 1 – 2pm at YCS office.

Your Care Services’ new partnership for preventative measures.

Your Turn logoWe have recently started a new partnership with Your Turn to promote pressure sore prevention in the West Midlands. Your Turn is a national organisation campaigning to prevent pressure ulcers through education and we are very pleased to be working with them.

In the UK £3.5 billion is spent on treating pressure ulcers every year.  In 2012 over 186,000 people suffered from pressure ulcers – almost equivalent to the population of Solihull.

80% of these pressure sores are completely avoidable if the right preventative methods are employed.

Our team of carers at Your Care Services have undergone the basic training which covers the five main principles of pressure ulcer prevention:

S – whether someone is Sick or unwell

S – whether there is Soreness or redness of the skin

K -whether they are able to Keep mobile

I – whether they are Incontinent

N – whether they have good Nutrition (food and drink)

Your Turn believes that by monitoring these five simple aspects of health, the majority of potential pressure ulcers will be spotted early and therefore be seen by a district nurse.

Claire James, campaign director for Your Turn said, “I have had personal experience of pressure ulcers and working in this area I have seen a huge amount of pain and suffering that is completely unnecessary.  By providing this information to people who care for those most at risk we are having a direct impact on the care that is provided. We also encourage every carer to pass the information onto others, in the hope that we will educate a whole generation in the basic principles of avoiding pressure ulcers.”

YCS support workers are provided with a learner workbook with all the information they need about pressure sore prevention and information leaflets have been given to our service users and their families. As part of our service users care diaries, a SSKIN risk assessment tool – similar to those used by district nurses – is now being used to assess the risk of pressures sores whenever they are visited by a YCS support worker. It is hoped that by using these tools, in conjunction with training, our support workers will be in a far better position to understand when the skin is likely to break down and will therefore be more vigilant and refer to health visitors when necessary.

The management team of YCS are also using the Green Safety Cross to monitor reporting’s of pressure sores on a daily basis. Theresa McCrea, Care manager of YCS said:

“Through working with Your Turn to develop these tools, we aim to improve the rate at which our support workers identify and report the signs of pressure sores so that we  can involve District nurses from the NHS as early as possible. By being proactive we hope to prevent the unnecessary pain that pressure sores can cause for our service users and improve their quality of life.”

Claire James also delivered a presentation to YCS service users at the Winter Warmer event on 6th November 2013.

Your Care Services employ ‘value based’ recruitment

Lee CollinsYour Care Services have recently developed a new way of assessing candidates and recruiting explains HR Manager Lee Collins. ‘Values based recruitment’ is a way of recruiting with a focus on care centred values rather than experience.  It’s been designed to help us as an employer in recruiting the right people, with the right care values, whom we can trust to provide care with a passion and stay with us for the long term to develop their careers in care.

There are two important workforce challenges faced by the care sector, which YCS are only too aware of. Firstly, we need to recruit people with the right values and behaviours to undertake the important roles in caring for our clients in the right way  Secondly, we need to maintain low levels of turnover to ensure consistency in the care we provide. The key questions that all care employers – big, small and independent – are likely to be asking, as we are, include:

–       How do we find and attract sufficient applicants for our vacant posts?

–       How do we check that they are suitable for the work?

–       Are they likely to stay, develop and progress?

The overall UK social care workforce is growing (currently c. 1.56 million people), but nationally there are current shortfalls in filling vacancies and there is evidence of high levels of turnover from the Skills for Care National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC) and other sources. High rates of turnover has implications for care quality and is certainly something that Your Care Services strive to avoid.

On a national basis, high turnover rates, particularly in the first few weeksof starting the role of a support worker , are often an indication that people have come into care but do not have the right values to see the job through. YCShope to avoid these kind of issues by ensuring that we get the application, recruitment, appointment and training process right from the outset.

High turnover rates lead to a lack of continuity – this is a factor that counts highly with people who use our services. Particularly in domiciliary care, our service users feel most comfortable when their carers are a familiar face who has got to know them as a person over the time they have been with our company.  Therefore, high rates of turnover which could lead to devastating effects for the delivery of high quality care services, which is what we pride ourselves on!

These social care values are at the heart of the Care and Support Bill; the national nursing and midwifery strategy, Compassion in Practice; and the Government’s responses to the report on Winterbourne View and the Francis Report into Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.

The easiest way to find out about someone’s underlying values is to ask them about how they behave in their everyday lives and this is what we do in our interview process. People express their values through their behaviours, and a good indicator of how people will behave in the future is how they have behaved in the past.

How does this fit in with what we are trying to achieve?  We are striving for the company to grow and develop into a service leader for the west midlands. To achieve this we have to employ the right people who can join us in our growth journey. Our staff arekey to our success and employing the right people is at the heart of everything we stand for.

There are vast amounts of recruitment prototypes available, all considered effective in their own rite. However, the values based approach to recruitment is a method adopted and championed by the health and social care sector as the key recruitment model and the best approach to recruiting the best candidates in to the sector.

Reward and recognition event spreads festive cheer among staff 

Just before Christmas we invited everyone from the Your Care Services team to a celebratory gathering in order to reflect on everyone’s outstanding performance throughout the year.

The event was held on Friday 20th December with a sparkling wine reception on arrival for all to enjoy. This gave an opportunity for team members to receive rewards in recognition for the work that they do within the company on a daily basis. There were plenty of Christmas crackers and mince pies to get everyone into the Christmas spirit, spreading festive cheer to one and all.

We handed out gift bags which included a diary and chocolates to all employees to ensure their dedication and hard work does not go unnoticed. Selected members of the support team received an award in recognition for going above and beyond in supporting our service users.

 

We also enjoyed a Christmas meal on Sunday 15th December where all employees could let their hair down and celebrate the great work they have done throughout the year.
The meal took place at the popular French restaurant Café Rouge in Birmingham where a magician provided entertainment and everyone got caught up in the festivities.

Warming up for the winter at Your Care Services

In the latest of a series of fundraising initiatives, Your Care Services ‘Winter Warmer’ event was successfully held on Wednesday 6th November with all proceeds going to the Child Brain Injury Trust.

Service-users and their families, Your Care Services staff, Child Brain Injury Trust representatives and members of the community came together over teas, coffees and cakes donated by Greggs.

A fundraising raffle was held with a collection of prizes to be won including Christmas hampers, wine and a bunch of festive goodies.

There were a number of guest talks including an introduction to the Child Brain Injury Trust from Community Fundraiser, Andrew Tee, who spoke about the recent road safety campaign ‘Be Seen, Not Hurt’ – a campaign that has been backed by Your Care Services staff which urges children to stay visible and safe during the winter months.

Aston Fire Service continued their great work for Your Care Services at the event, who were present to offer out information on fire safety in the home, whilst Claire James from Your Turn provided a compelling talk on the dangers of pressure sores.

The Your Turn campaign was launched in June 2006 with the aim of raising public awareness about the dangers of pressure ulcers – the aim of the campaign is to locally reduce pressure sore prevalence through education. To find out more visit www.your-turn.org.uk.

As the opening event of the fundraising partnership, the Your Care Services Winter Warmer raised £160 for the Child Brain Injury Trust. Together with funds raised from the sponsored ‘walk to work’ this brings the Your Care Services fundraising team total to £320.

The next fundraising event to be held by Your Care Services will be the reward and recognition Christmas celebration (date TBC).

Your Care Services fundraising future

Your Care Services has announced details of its official fundraising partnership with the Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) which is a leading national charity, providing non-medical support to families affected by childhood acquired brain injury.

Your Care Services has pledged its support to the charity and the team are planning a number of exciting projects and fundraising activities to be held over the next year.

To kick off the fundraising programme, a planning meeting took place at the Your Care Services offices on 18 October, where the families of service-users, Your Care Services staff, CBIT representatives and other stakeholders collated ideas and started planning the next 12 months of fundraising.

Two members of the management team, Theresa McCrea and Amanda Beavan, completed a 6 mile ‘Halloween walk to work’ sporting their Halloween hats on October 31st. The walk has raised over £150 for the charity.

Amanda said: “We started our walk at sunrise at the The Robin Hood Island, making our way up the main Stratford road to the Your Care offices in the city centre. On the journey we had about 15 passers by beep their horn in support. We made it to the office for 9am and were welcomed with a jubilant cheer from the office team.”

Amanda wore bright pink in support of the Child Brain Injury Trust’s first ever road safety campaign, ‘Be Seen, Not Hurt’. The aim of the ‘Be Seen, Not Hurt’ campaign, is to raise awareness of the Child Brain Injury Trust and for children to stay visible during the winter evenings – reflective ‘slap wraps’ will be handed out to spread the safety message.

A reason for living: how a social approach to healthcare can help

As a well-respected health professional and also managing director of Your Care Services, Miriam Sharma, was recently invited to provide her expert views on the benefits of a ‘social approach to healthcare’ for the Guardian homecare hub.

The article takes us through the journey of a service-user, Fred, in his struggle with the effects of acquired brain injury. Whilst the healthcare Fred received through the NHS allowed him to take his first steps to recovery – after suffering a fatal accident – it was the persistent support from the Your Care Services staff that was the real turning point in Fred’s life.

Despite being physically capable, Fred had a tendency for aggressive behaviour which provided a barrier to his care. The social approach to healthcare provided by Your Care Services not only focused on maintaining Fred’s physical health, but helped to achieve his re-integration into society.
